Invisalign® Clear Aligners

Woman using clear alignerLincoln Smiles understands your desire for a healthy, confident smile. Crooked teeth, crowded teeth, and spaced teeth can all affect not only the appearance of your smile but your overall oral health as well. Aligned teeth don’t just look nicer than crooked teeth, but straight teeth are easier to clean, too. Whatever your reason for considering Invisalign, we can help. Allow us to explain what Invisalign is and how it works, as well as help you decide if Invisalign is right for you.

What Is Invisalign and How Does It Work?

Similar to metal braces, Invisalign is used to straighten and align your teeth over a period of time. However, unlike traditional braces, this increasingly popular method uses a series of clear, strong, plastic trays rather than brackets and wires to slowly force the teeth into position.

After our initial consultation to determine your personal treatment plan, we will make molds or impressions of your mouth to be used to design your custom fit tray aligners. The tray is placed over the teeth and is shaped slightly differently than your mouth in order to shift the teeth and shape the mouth and jaw. The trays are replaced every week or two, depending on your own specific needs, and each one more closely resembles the desired end result.

The trays must be worn for a minimum of 20-22 hours a day, while both sleeping and awake, otherwise you will not experience the results you want. Aligners are removed easily when it comes time to eat or brush or floss your teeth, and they should be cleaned regularly.

While some mouth discomfort is inevitable due to the shifting, many patients consider Invisalign to be more comfortable to wear than traditional braces because the tray is smooth to eliminate irritation. It is also nearly invisible and is therefore less obvious when you smile.

The treatment time with Invisalign depends on how much moving, rotating, and otherwise shifting of teeth is required to achieve the results you want. Another factor that contributes to the success of these aligners is your compliance with proper use of the tray. While the length of time needed to complete treatment varies, results can be seen after a few weeks.

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Whether Invisalign is right for you depends on factors such as your overall oral health, commitment to proper use and good oral hygiene practices, personal preference, and financial ability.

Those with tooth and gum related problems like cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease should deal with those problems prior to using Invisalign. Invisalign can provide fantastic results with proper use and excellent care, which includes wearing and cleaning the aligner as directed.

Some patients do not like the idea of having to remove the tray before eating, which can lead to some embarrassment when dining out or with others. Some also consider it inconvenient to have to brush their teeth after eating and prior to replacing the tray.

Cost is an additional factor when considering Invisalign. Portions of this treatment are generally covered by health insurance, but not always. We will work with you and your insurance company to determine the payment solution for you.
